Saab may not be a huge named car in America, though most people are familiar with them. They are somewhat territorial, we don’t even have a dealer in our town. Believe it or not, Saab had a turbocharged engine available in 1978, well before turbo’s became a craze in passenger cars.
By 1979 Saab was offering engine model B201, a 2.0 liter motor which was an original H engine, available with Bosh K-Jetronic fuel injection and a turbocharger. [FYI: Almost the exact same system as on my 1977 Porsche 911S engine]. It was not a fancy engine, using one OHC [overhead camshaft].
Saab was sort of a cult car back then, but it set the way for some really nice designs like adding a turbo that was well mannered. The great part for any Saab 900 owner, especially the early models is we sell Saab 900 Turbos Remanufactured to Exceed OEM Specs. TurbosAndSuperchargers.com @ 1-866-244-4905.
From 1986 to 1989 Saab offered model B201, the same basic 2.0 liter engine mentioned above. In 1984 the B202 16 valve turbo engine was used. Also 2 liters in size, it was outfitted with a more efficient head design. DOHC head setup. Double overhead camshafts improve engine efficiency while cutting down on valve-train parts.
Saab redesigned the car in 1994 and designated it the 900 NG. The SE model came with a 4 cylinder turbo engine. In some markets the B234 2.3 liter turbocharged engine was used.
Buying the best replacement turbo is of prime importance. When you consider the turbo pump is powered by hot exhaust gasses, and is right in the center of the hot engine, it takes a beating. Like all parts, turbos fail and need replacing.
This is a great opportunity to buy the best rebuilt turbo on the market, directly from a factory supplier. Buying anything but the best rebuilt turbo, or a brand new one is a mistake and will cost much more down the road than buying a hi quality product the first time.
When you consider that a turbo spins at speeds as high as 16,000 RPM’s, it’s easy to understand why replacement parts like bearings need to be the finest quality. Then consider the intense heat the turbo is subjected to and it’s immediately evident the finest products cost less in the long run.
